What is practice? Three things:
1.
What to learn
-- the selective process.
2.
Repeating what you learned many times – Relax, notice
and focus with a clear mind as in meditation – stay present.
3.
Application of what you think you know – Utilize
your new language.
One, ask yourself this question: What do I want to learn?
Make a choice (if you are a beginner, choose an instrument) and
select (if beginning, select a good teacher) something to practice.
To start, there are usually five basic springboards to
consider cultivating:
·
TONE QUALITY
-- Cultivate your personal sound
(if you are a beginner, find a good instrument).
·
INTERVALS
-- Basic building blocks (if you are a beginner, learn the definition of semi-tone and whole tone and their combinations).
·
SCALES – A foundation for good technique (if you
are a beginner, learn to read a sequence of notes in melodic fragments).
·
CHORDS – A harmonic vocabulary (if you are a
beginner, learn the five primary chord shapes).
LEARN TUNES/MUSICAL MATERIAL –
Road Map and Traffic Signals (if you are a beginner, acquire some simple sheet
music).
Two, are you willing to repeat things 108 times?
Three, can you play what you learned?
